The standard of football in South Africa; the downward spiral of the national team

Looking at South Africa’s football standards, one sees a drop on the professionalism and commitment which was displayed by the class of 1996, when the South African national team went on to be crowned champions of Africa, in the 1996 African cup of nations challenge. Since then the South African national team has never filled the trophy cabinet with any silver or gold. And it has being over 16 years now since the 1996 African cup of nations, what does such a gap in achievement say about the quality that south African football has to offer. The other problem about the south african national team s that, our national team could use a Lionell messi,to pull in the crowds, seeing that the standard of a nations football is also dependent on the support it gets from the people, and at the moment the South African national team really
is in need of a crowd puller.(www.africa-united.co.uk/)

Another burning issue is that our national team loses a lot of talented players to international teams. The likes of; Quinton Fortune, Aaron Mokoena, Steven Pinaar, and Lucas Radebe, to name a few. Then a question of who to blame arises, either for the drop in the in standard of football or for the fact that so many South African players play their football in foreign nations and that most of them do not want to come play for the national team as they see it as a risk to their careers as they might attain injuries. Is it maybe because the South African football association is not doing enough to market the South African football brand in foreign countries? In order to make internationally based South African players to have an interest in playing for their nation, the communication team of the South African football association should put certain measures in place to improve the way other nations portray South African football.

  1. national team selectors should not pick players because of the clubs they player for but they should look at how regular a player plays for his team and they should also check if the player is in form for his team.

  5. I think we have to look at our current SAFA management structure(they have issues on their own), our national team is not promising at all, there is a huge gap between our 1996 CAF champions and to the current players. SAFA management and techical team should ask themselves what is wrong? what actions to be taken? how should be taken? because if they dont take into consideration in this time they'll end up nowhere.

  6. my point exactly mthokozisi, even Robert Marawa a superspot diski channel presenter and soccer analyst pointed out that if management does not get organised, the south african national team will not be ready to compete in any major football tournament

  7. They are not fair, i agree with Thabang.. they must look at the player's performance not the clubs they play for, our last game.. we had 6 sundowns players in starting eleven. we gonna host CAF next year and we exepecting a huge embarrasment.. we wont compete with the like of Ghana, zambia and ivory coast

  8. Mxo we do need new players not players picked because they play for certain teams. because the is talent out there in small teams. the scouts need to look in oreder parts when selecting players
